The Shakeree is also played all over Africa and is used in Brazil and the Caribbean. Ours are covered with a net woven of little seeds. The Straw Rattles are made in Ghana, filled with small pebbles and finshed with a piece of gourd or the bottom from a recycled milk can.

The 3-Seed Rattle is made of three large seed pods filled with pebbles and glued on a stick. The Gourd Rattles are small gourds cut in two and filled with pebbles. They have a little design burned on the outside. The Cane Rattle is made of two small gourds filled with pebbles and woven together with rattan. (Shown in pairs but each item comes singly.)

The Juju Seed Rattle is made of cocoa seed pods tied onto a wooden stick. The seed pods are quite hard and make a strong, rattle sound. The Pititika are made of iron and come in two pieces. One is worn on the thumb and the other on the middle finger. They are hit together like finger cymbals. The Ratatak in the bottom photo is made of round pieces of gourd stacked on a stick. The gourd pieces are relatively soft and do not make as hard a sound as the cocoa seeds of the Juju Seed Rattle.

These Flutes are from Morocco and made out of cane. They are actually whistles with six notes and the design is burned into the cane.

The Balaphone is made of two kinds of wood, gourds and sinew. We know it as a xylophone or a marimba. The keys are made of a very hard nut wood and the gourds below are used for resonance. The body structure is of a much lighter wood. Mallets are included which are usually made with wood and pieces of recycled tires.
