This drum is called the Djembe. They are played all over West Africa and ours are hand-carved in Ghana. The wood is from a tree called the tweneboa which means drum tree. They have a goat-skin head and nylon cord strapping. (We have taken care to find a cord that will not stretch.) Djembes are known for their wonderful deep sound and their sharp rimside slaps. We have them in two sizes.

The Talking Drum is another drum played in all West African countries. It is also known as the squeeze drum and is called a tama in Senegal. These particular drums are made in Kumasi, Ghana. They get their name from the way they're played. They are held under the arm and squeezed to tighten the head. This tightening changes the tone and the drum is made to "talk". They're usually played with a mallet and this is included with the drum. They come in three sizes.

Aburi drum with design and pegged head
The Aburi drum is actually a creation of Asylum Down. It is made with children in mind and therefore doesn't have the best sound quality. It does have a wonderful design and comes from a town in Ghana called Aburi.

Moroccan doumbec, small, goatskin head
This is the small Doumbec from Morocco. They're ceramic and the heads are goat skin. They have a great "doom" in the center and a nice sharp "tek" on the rim. They are also known as darboukas and are played all over the Middle East and North Africa. We know them here in the United States for their use in belly dance music.

Painted tam-tams, 4 sizes
Tam-tams, no-glaze, double strapping
These drums are called Tam-Tams in Morocco. They are ceramic and the heads are cow hide. They are similar to a bongo except that they're closed on the bottom. They come in two styles-one has a hand-painted fired glaze and the other is plain but has double strapping. They both come in three sizes with an additional size in the painted tam-tam. This tiny size does not have a decent sound but is good for children.
